In the aftermath of Robin Williams' suicide, Sociology Professor Susan Sered tells the sad story of Joy, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and later substance abuse who was saved from suicide only to be inserted into a nightmarish "system" that offers little real assistance.

"...When the run-arounds and incompetences are built into the laws, the regulations, the policies and rules and protocols, then they must be understood as manifestations of “the system” rather than as haphazard or idiosyncratic exceptions," writes Sered in the blog post "Suicide is Painful."
