BOSTON, MA—September 30, 2010—On Wednesday, September 22, the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education, in collaboration with the Accounting Department at Suffolk University, saw a record turnout for their annual “Meet the Firms” night. More than 230 students attended the event that provides accounting and tax students with the opportunity to meet with representatives from major accounting firms and financial institutions.
Despite a tough economy, the event saw a twenty percent increase in employer participation with twenty-four firms attended with information and job leads for Suffolk students. The variety of employers also increased this year, with the inclusion of non-public accounting firms for the first time, such as Fidelity Investments, Liberty Mutual, and the IRS.
Employers also deemed the evening a success. Many of the firms have already arranged to set-up interviews with students they met at the event, either on-campus or at their offices. A representative from the IRS said, “It was a great success and the students could not have been more receptive. We have many resumes to follow up on and we were thrilled so many expressed the interest/desire to work for the IRS.” This sentiment was echoed by representatives from the many other firms, who were impressed by both the enthusiasm, and the sheer number of interested students participating in the event. A representative from one of the participating firms commented that, “with so many great accounting candidates, area firms should have no problem recruiting new associates.”
Accounting students were equally pleased with the outcome of the evening. The President of Beta Alpha Psi, the Suffolk Accounting Honor Society remarked, “Meet the Firms Night is the best event on campus for accounting students to meet fellow students, learn more about potential employers and to expand their network. It was a great opportunity for me to be part of such an event with tremendous opportunities to network and to familiarize myself with future employers.” Students left the event with job leads, potential interviews, and greater knowledge about the accounting field.
One of the critical goals of the CS/CE office is to assist students in finding their way through the sometimes daunting job market. An event such as this, where students looking for employment meet with firms looking for new employees, is one way the office aides students. The success of the Meet the Firms night was a great start to the upcoming networking season. Other events taking place this fall include the Communications/Marketing Networking Event on October 27, the Graduate Student Career Expo on November 3, and Career Week, taking place from October 25-November.
