Classroom accommodations are coordinated on a case-by-case basis with the student and, if necessary, the professor. Please note that the approval and implementation of classroom accommodations tend to require several days and, often, a few weeks of planning because the process involves collaborating with multiple third parties outside of Disability Services. For this reason, we need to receive advance notice for classroom accommodation requests. We will do our best to process late requests.
Requests for most classroom accommodations should be submitted prior to the first day of classes each semester. However, requests for course materials in digital format for print-related disabilities should be submitted at least 6-8 weeks in advance of the first day of classes, as this is a time-intensive process involving consultations with several internal and external parties which often requires line-by-line editing of the electronic texts. Students will need to submit receipts confirming purchase (not rental) of new (not used) course books and, in cases where a book is unavailable through the publisher, the book itself must be provided for document conversion. Requests for volunteer note-takers should be submitted within the first week of classes after the drop/add period. Please note that making arrangements for students with approved note-taking as an accommodation can take 7-14 business days from the time of request, or sometimes longer. Requests for communication access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing should generally be submitted 60 days prior to the start of the semester, as many of these services also require collaborating with third party agencies and services and depend on the availability of service providers who partner with colleges and universities across New England. Requests for a reduced course load based on the impact of a disability should generally be submitted in the form of a written petition to Disability Services before the first day of classes each semester.
Students should schedule an appointment to meet with Disability Services to discuss appropriate classroom accommodations and the logistics involved in their implementation. Please note that students in dual degree programs must follow the procedures of both programs.
