Professor Steven Eisenstat was quoted in an article in the Fall 2015 issue of The National Jurist, “Is Facebook hurting your grades?” The article discusses distractions in the classroom caused by students using electronic devices for purposes unrelated to the class. Professor Eisenstat explained to the National Jurist that even the use of laptops for note-taking purpose can detract from student learning, because students can quickly type everything a professor presents without listening, comprehending and effectively “encoding” what the professor is saying. Professor Eisenstat said that he banned laptops in his class in the Fall of 2006 and that he has never regretted it.
